On hiatus

I'll be taking a hiatus from this blog....  there's a lot of shit going on at the Dean household at the moment.  I've got to focus on that.  I may post a song or not, or a picture, but don't expect anything coherent for a while.

Today's mood....

Not much better, but there's hope.

Ooooooh, I was born a ramblin' man!

Yet another late night blog post.  And another that rambles, because I'm not tired, but need to get to bed.

Today was a good day.  Well, it didn't start out that way, but it ended up there.  Justin got a call at 1:30am that one of his guys was puking, so he had to go in and cover the rest of his shift.  He got home a little after 6am.  :(  The nice part was that after the girls went to school, I went back upstairs and crawled back into bed with him.  I slept until 11am.  I can't remember the last time I got to sleep in that late, and with Justin in the bed.  It was wonderful, crazy dreams and all.

I have the sock pattern written up.  My friends JoAnna and Mary are testing it.  Mary caught a couple mistakes, which were easily remedied.  :)  She loves the sock, which gives me a warm fuzzy.  I like it, too.

Classes are going better than I thought they would.  I'm getting tons of people in my photo classes.  This session I have 5 people in my darkroom class, and three in digital.  People are being waitlisted for some of my classes.  I'm making more money doing this than I was when I was still a regular employee.  I'm enjoying it a hell of a lot more, too.  I'm working on a Photoshop class for the late summer and possibly an alt process class.

I'm still debating grad school.  I have money from the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which was a complete surprise.  It'll pay for a good part of my tuition if I can get to school while Justin is still AD.  I can use the BAH I'll get to pay whatever tuition isn't covered.  I'm aiming for UW-Seattle.  They have fibers as an undergrad program and a photography MFA, so the work I've been planning to do will fit nicely.  I just need to figure out the time to do it.

Wedding photography seems to be what I'm meant to do, at least for the time being.  I had another wedding fall into my lap over the weekend.  I shot it yesterday.  My friend Amy's vow renewal is this weekend.  I'm waiting to hear back on one for April, and then there are a few for June/July.  I need to get my website polished and put an ad on Craigslist.  I'll probably get more than I can handle!

I'm working on another pattern.  This one is a sweater based on one Angela's friend wore to her bachelorette party.  It's super cute, with a wide neck that can e worn a lot of different ways, set in sleeves, and a really simple stitch.  I think I may do it in laceweight on large needles.  That seems to work well here.

I think that's all I've got for right now.  Oh, the rambling....

Wedding pic spam!!!

My good friends Angela and Doug got married yesterday!  They asked me to shoot their wedding, which I was thrilled to do.  The wedding was perfect.  Simple, beautiful, and so full of love it was amazing.  I wasn't the only friend who offered up talent for the wedding- they had another friend do the cake, a second do the food (YUM) and a friend who is a hula kumu in a halau come with some of the dancers.  I'll make a longer post later, but for now here are a few I edited so they could send them out to those who couldn't make it.

I'M A PUBLISHED DESIGNER!!!!

There was much squeeeing this morning.

My sock pattern is going to be part of The Sanguine Gryphon's summer '10 collection!!!!

I can't show you till it's published, but I'm wicked excited.  This pattern was born on a lark.  I had a skein of Sundara sock yarn I wanted to use.  I had an overwhelming itch to make a pair of socks.  I pulled out the stitch dictionary, did some maths and started knitting.....  after several frogs, a sock was born.  I had no idea what to do with it beyond putting it up for sale on Ravelry.  The I saw the call for patterns from TSG and figured what the hell?  I have a pattern, and it's good.  If they tell me no, I'll go with the original plan.  BUT THEY TOOK IT.  :D

It's a beyooooootiful sock.  Feminine, but not girly.  Sizeable beyond the sizes I'll write it in.  You can make it taller and give it calf shaping.  It's easy to narrow if you have a narrow foot (and most people have a smaller foot than I do.  I wear 9-9.5 wide.  I have big, flat feet.  Wearing flip-flops every day hasn't helped.).

So now it's to grading, swatching in the SG yarn (I get to try one I haven't used before!), and knitting the sock again.  In return I get 50% of the pattern sales and being attached to the SG brand for three years.  Not too shabby for my second time out the gate (I have a free bag pattern up on Rav).  When the pattern is up, I'll make sure to post.  It looks like mid-May or June based on when I need to have the pattern to Gryphon.  But for now you can all squeeeeeee along with me!!!

Actual Knitting Content

I have submitted to Dayflower sock to The Sanguine Gryphon to be considered for their summer '10 pattern collection.  If it's accepted, I'll keep the rights, but it'll be exclusive to them for 3 years.  I get 50% of the pattern sales, which is fine, because that's what I'd charge on Ravelry.  So keep your fingers crossed!

Now that I have that done, I can concentrate on other projects.  I have Lancia's sweater to finish, and I want to get that done.  Then there's the Kaleidoscope cardigan, which is probably 40% done.  I'm still spinning up the alpaca that will eventually become Bitterroot. And I'm working on more socks.  I got some great yarn from Sonny and Shear when they shut their (virtual) doors, and some really neat purple and black from my friend Didi.  There is plenty to keep me busy.

On top of all that, I have two flower girl dresses and my dress to make.  Luckily Anne used to be a costumer.  She's going to help me.  :)

March is ok- so far

The first couple weeks of March have gone pretty well.  Considering at this point last month we were trying to figure out if we needed to get a lawyer in Louisiana to keep a stalking whore (aka Jenn Green, "Christian jazz singer") away from us, it's fantastic!

Yesterday my friend Anne picked me up and we headed over Kaneohe to Aloha Yarns.  I love that store.  Nanea is so nice.  The store is small, but has a good selection.  I didn't need much, just a skein of sock yarn for the socks I'm designing.  I have one pair almost done, but the second is giving me fits.  Plus I want to work up a second pair when the testers get back to me so I can see what any changes would be for myself. I found a really nice skein of merino/alpaca/nylon from Plymouth.  It's their Dye For Me line, and the specific yarn is Dancing Toes.  It's wonderfully soft and squooshy!

After that we were going to go over Kailua for lunch, but on the way out of town I spied the fabric store I've been wanting to go to.  Every time I'm over in K-bay I have some reason (Justin and the girls, a friend who doesn't sew, etc) I can't go in there.  Well, Anne sews, and she's damn good at it, so she turned around and we went.  I got a couple of patterns and saw some beautiful fabrics.  Best of all, I've got some great ideas for the flower girl dresses I need for the girls this summer.  They're going to be in Jesse and Gina's wedding.  I'm not crazy about spending $100/dress for something they'll wear once.  So when Anne told me she used to be a costumer, I asked her to help me make the dresses.  We can likely do both for less than $50.  She was all over it.  :)  We also found a pattern for me.  It's a cute retro dress that will be really comfy to shoot in all day.

To top off the day, she took me to lunch at Panda Express.  Mmmmmm.... orange chicken.  :p  We tried to go to Helena's, a Hawaiian place, but they were closed on Mondays.  Boo.  We ended up back at my house, where we found out the cafe we have knit night at had a kitchen fire and was likely closed.  Double boo.

Today I got to have breakfast with Amber and Gloria.  I haven't seen Gloria in forever, so BSing with her was really nice.  I'll be happy when we move over there by her and I can see her more often.  I got to snuggle the baby, who still gives me the stink eye at times....  like I'm going to steal his non-existent wallet.  Apparently he does that to a lot of people.  It's pretty funny.

The rest of this month is looking to be busy.....  this weekend is a birthday party, next week is spring break, the bachelor/bachelorette parties for Doug and Angela, and their wedding on the 20th.  Then my friend Amy is renewing her vows on the 27/28 of March and I'm shooting it.  I still have sizing and some editing to do on the sock pattern, and then I have to decide what to do with it.... do I submit it to Knitty?  Self publish?  Sanguine Gryphon is running a call for designers, so maybe I'll do that.  If it doesn't make the cut, I can always take one of the other two options.

Hopefully April will be slow.  All we have is Justin's birthday, and that's not till the end of the month.

It's a start....

I'm hoping this morning's dream is a good omen for today.

When the alarm went off, I was having a dream in which I was Randall and Dante and I were "borrowing" my grandmother's car to go do something Randall-like. I believe Jay and Silent Bob made a brief appearance, too. I just wish I could remember what it was we were going to do.

There was an empty baby seat in the back, which I, as Randall, pronounced creepy.  "Like she kept it to remind her of dead babies or some shit".  We were at a mall, and it was the East Coast (where else???).  Grandma drove a red Fit.

I am NOT pregnant.  I do have crazy dreams just about every night.  I think this one was because Justin was up at 5am and I went back to sleep after the alarm went off.  I didn't have to be up till 6:30.  I always get crazy ass dreams in between him getting up and my alarm going off.

Also, it's raining again today.  I love it when it rains.

Rawr

I am having a somewhat shitty day.  And no I don't want to go into it.  But right now I hate most things, and people piss me off.

And yes- I do have PMS.  But that's not why I'm cranky.  PMS usually is a migraine, and I pass out for the evening.  It's not "IhatehteowrldIwantyoualltoDIAMFF."

Grawr.

At least tomorrow is lunch and yarn shopping with my friend Anne.  That will be fun.  Maybe the funk will go away.

Mar 4, 2010

It's been a good day, tater....

Because today is my birthday!  Beyond that, cool stuff has happened today.

Justin let me sleep in, and he got the girls off to school.  And neither of us had to drive.  :)

We both got showers and completely ready to go before the water got turned off.

My parking karma is still good.

We went to the vasectomy briefing, laughed our asses off and will be calling bright and early Monday to make the appointment for his procedure.

I had Taco Bell for lunch.

I found a kickass skull shirt at Target.

I outprocessed my job and am completely a contractor now.  Plus it looks like the director will buy a new laptop and Photoshop so I can teach a Photoshop class.

I got cool beads to make stitchmarkers.

My MIL sent me money!

I have had many, MANY happy birthday messages!  So many on Facebook that I had to hit the "older posts" button three times.  My friends are awesome.

Justin is making dinner (probably chicken curry and yellow rice) and brownies tonight.

Tomorrow is a furlough day, so I can sleep in again!

I have the 100th episode of Ghost Hunters on the DVR ready to watch tonight.

This has been an awesome, awesome birthday.  :D
